Observations on my eating habits.

So… after reviewing my food diaries over the weekend, I notice a few things about how my eating habits define who I am.

Number One: Wow, basically everything I eat, I eat because it is convenient. I do not think very deeply about what to eat. Usually, I just grab it. I would probably take a nutrition pill if this were an option… even though I love to eat.

Number TWO: I am a social person! I barely ate anything alone. This is interesting to me because I do not usually spend so much time with people, but I think I am becoming more social in my old age.

Number THREE: I do not eat enough. Since I am not very mindful of what I am eating, and since I am capable of standing extreme discomfort, I generally do not eat as much as I should. If I ran a nutritional analysis over the calories I intook, I probably would find that I am malnourished. I wonder how I would feel if I ate more balanced meals, and more consistently.

You are what you eat.

After you finish the your third daily entry, take a look over your entries. What strikes you? What patterns do you notice?

How do your food choices help reveal what you think is important or not? What does that say about who you are?

Post a blog discussing how you think your food buying and consumption patterns help define who you are. Think carefully and deeply. Be creative.

If you finish early, take a gander at your classmate’s blogs. Are there any patterns you see in their eating/buying habits? Is it similar or different to yours? What strikes you? What questions does it raise? Leave comment love!

Food Diary, Day 3

Brunch: Banana, yogurt, granola & honey, coffee (black) with a friend in my house.
Snack: Mini Cliffs bar, with a friend, at the Earth Day Festival
Dinner: Half of a Chipotle chicken bowl with rice, black beans, corn salsa, sour cream and cheese. I also ate chips. At Chipotle, by myself.
Late night snack: 8 Ritz crackers and orange juice, with my roomie (although she did not eat).

So this is pretty typical for a weekend day. I tend to eat less on the weekend, because there is not structured mealtimes (before work, during work, after work). I chose the foods because they were yummy, and convenient. Like, Chipotle happened because I knew I needed to eat, and it was really close to where I’d parked for Earth Day.

Food Diary, Day 2

Breakfast: Nothing (water!!)
Lunch: 1&1/2 cornmeal blueberry pancakes and a cup of coffee (black) with a friend at The Mission.
Snack: 6-7 Ritz crackers, peanut butter, and apple juice in my house with my roomie & a friend.
Dinner: Bowl of Honey Smacks and milk with a friend (although, he did not eat) at my house.
Dessert: Coffee ice cream with a friend at my house.

So this morning was pretty atypical. I was feeling really sick today, and so lunch was late and breakfast didn’t happen at all. I chose the foods based on my sincere love for those blueberry cornmeal pancakes, and also, for convenience.

WHAT I ATE:
Breakfast: A banana & a cup of coffee (black). I ate breakfast alone, although I was eating in the staff meeting. I chose these foods because coffee is a ritual, and breakfast is an easy start.
Snack: 6-7 apple slices. I chose these foods because I did not feel like junk food. I ate this with a classroom visitor, and during class!
Lunch: A peanut butter, raspberry jelly, and banana sandwich. I drank water. I ate this with a couple co-workers at school.
Dinner #1: 2 slices of frozen supreme pizza and Arizona Lemon iced tea. I ate this with my brother at his house.
Dinner #2: Gnocchi pasta. 4-5 ounces of bread & vinegar. I ate this at a friend’s house.

This is a pretty typical day for me – although, I do not usually eat two dinners. Today, I needed to spend time with my brother and with a friend (separate purposes) and both gave me dinner, so that’s how I chose those foods. Other than that, the foods I brought and eat represent my firm commitment to convenience!

Opinion Blogs for IDM

During the Marketing School portion of our International Dream Makers Project (IDM for short), I will be asking you to write a few opinion blogs regarding your perspective on the media.

Please title each of your opinion blogs “Opinion Blog #__”, as this will help you and I both keep track of which assignments you have done, and which ones you need to complete.

The first Opinion Blog is a response to these questions:

How do you use media in your life? How does technology help or hurt communication?

My own response to this is:

WOW — I use media all the time. At first, when I thought about how I use media, I was not really thinking I used very much at all. Between today and yesterday, I only emailed, talked, and posted something to my DP. But then I realized that I also shared music on YouTube, wrote on my white board, watched TV and music videos, and read a chapter in a book! Media is everywhere, and I barely notice it at all.

I think that technology both harms and helps communication. We are not usually mindful with how we use technology (sometimes we use it instead of communicating truly!) and that might mean that we abuse it. However, it really allows people to connect with one another! I have a friend in Guatemala, and I don’t know how we could communicate if we didn’t have phones and the Internet. I am not sure for the whole world, but in my life, I feel like it helps more than it hurts.

“Nighty-Night Nina”

Scene Proposal

Group: Swimming Pumpkins

Members: Tony Anglin, James Arriola, Denise Collantes, Mallory Johnson, Marco Oliva, Kathryn Sanchez

1) Description of Scene (What will the audience experience?)

When the guests walk in, precious little Nina is sleeping on her bed while the actors/ dolls are hiding in the cabinet or under the bed. Suddenly, all the lights go off and the strobe light starts flickering on and off. The guests then hear Nina scream and they see a sign that says “Nighty Night Nina.” The actors/ dolls come out and start walking slowly toward the guests. The guests start leaving and before they exit, they see Nina hanging in the cabinet. The guests then exit and the scene ends.

2) Connections or Inspirations

We got some of our ideas from Child’s Play.

Reading & Me

Growing up, I loved to read. The summer that I had just turned 12, I enrolled in a Summer Reading Contest and read over 200 books. As I look back on that time today, I am not sure how it is even humanly possible to read that many books in a single summer. But I did.

And then I started college.

Every week, I had over 200 pages of dense reading, which I liked… but I spent all my time reading for requirement, and I lost my love for reading. After I graduated from college, I became a teacher, and I wanted to say, “Read! It’s so great!” but I couldn’t because I forgot how great it was.

The summer before my 2nd year of teaching, I started a Summer Reading Contest with my roommate as a way of motivating myself to read. It worked. I won the Summer Reading Contest, and I also remembered how much I love to read. I love description, and sentence structures, and stories.  I also loved the way it felt to read the last page, and shut the book with satisfaction.

I was hooked.

And now I am back. An avid reader with a love for books of all flavors.

I am currently reading a book called I’d Rather Teach Peace and it’s by Colman McCarthy. It’s a true chronicle of his life as he began crafting and teaching a course on peace studies. I am also reading a book of poems entitled Ballistics by Billy Collins, one of my favorite poets of all time (top 3 fo’sho).

What are your reading stories? Write a short account about your story with reading – do you like it? Did you used to like it? Did something change when you started middle school? What are you reading now? What is your favorite book and when did you read it for the first time? Or anything you think is interesting to include. Happy blogging!
