Today’s discussion on immigration-related social issues.
Last week most of the class went to the museum to get a little insight on the comic. Today, the group had a discussion where we talked about immigration, racism and the crime surrounding both. Several issues and questions were brought up, such as tolerance to racism less than ten years ago within our schools and perspectives on immigration, legal and illegal.
Something that was noticed in the paintings at the exhibition last week was the depiction of the immigrants and border patrol. More often than not, border patrol were portrayed as villains, monsters or just apathetic towards the people they were deporting or attempting to deport, while immigrants were poor innocent people just trying to make the most out of what they had. We discussed that this might not always be the case, it’s just how the artist sees them. another perspective this, for example, is that the border patrol are just acting in the interest of their country. Most of the time, it’s not full on “I hate these people.” discrimination, but subtle prejudice. Things that start off as jokes that escalate over the years. Also is the perspective of safety here. There are people who are so scared of being attacked that they spend as minimal amount of time as possible out of the house, while somewhere else across the country there are people that feel completely comfortable and the chances of being attacked are very low, so they’re secure in their “bubble”. Where the issues of drug cartels and immigration aren’t much of a part of their lives.
This is what we want to show. We want to show that something is going on. It’s to bring awareness to this issue.
So here’s the updates:
Final draft of the rest of the script is underway and the second page is being planned. The first panel is inked and being colored.
Christian,
Please read through this article, I believe following it will help us create a strong presence for the project:

Sorry for the post delay. The Earth was shut down for the last two weeks.
Almost everyone’s been certified in their department and we’ll get a picture showing the chart up as soon as we find a more efficient way to upload pictures. We started work on the first page Tuesday and the first panel will be ready for inking by today. I’m going start video journals today, which I’ll be posting later. I’ll also be taking notes throughout the day to give a better blog(something I should have done from the start.).

CRASH COMICS: FIRST BLOG!! (YAY!)
Hello people, welcome to CRASH! Comics.
So, about what we do, this program is dedicated to learning about the art of comic books. It’s a little more complicated than the general public thinks. While many people might think a comic book is some guys drawing pictures and putting in speech bubbles, they are WRONG. Well, not dead wrong, there is just a little more to it than that.
Just barely scratching the surface, there’s:
- scripting process – Ever read the setting portion of a real script? Imagine that on every panel.
- drawing process
- inking process – Look at a graphic novel and notice how all the lines and shadows aren’t the same size and shade.
- coloring – Harder than color by numbers.
- and typography – Speech bubbles and text are a challenge to put in tastefully.
That was just a short and microscopic description of what goes in a comic. Yes, mega-ultra-tiny-don’t-let-your-pet-ant-inhale-it small.
So, on our progress:
The penciling team started their certification processes in penciling on Tuesday and should get over that hill soon, to find the even bigger and more rewarding hill of the actual comic work. Mountain, forget the hill.
Pheonix was certified in research, character development and is working on his scripting certification.
About 75% of the proposal was completed Tuesday and should also be done soon. There’s lots of drawing training going on which from what I can hear from here is very interesting, even if you’re not all that into drawing. Character profiles were started and a good site for learning typography was found.
So, we had a very productive day and will have more of these as the weeks come during which I’ll be looking for a good way to organize the pictures and be updating this blog twice a week.
